One of the most private email communication systems consists in using a proxy to connect to a free webmail service and encrypt the messages yourself with PGP, this method gives you privacy and anonymity. Thunderbird+Enigmail, or GPG4Win could do that and it won’t cost you a cent, another easy privacy email system consists in using a proprietary email client like Safester or Trulymail to encrypt everything end to end, but the receiver will have to be using the same software. As a last resort you can use a webmail service with superb privacy policy, these are hard to come by for free.
ProtonMail: Switzerland based email provider with free and paid accounts. Sending email messages is with end to end encryption when you communicate with other users on the same service and in plain text when communicating with users outside ProtonMail, the company itself can’t read your data.
Tutanota: Free privacy email service based in Germany, your messages are encrypted in your browser, the company can not read anything and has no decryption keys, they keep no login IPs and have no way to identify customers or decrypt the data.
Unseen.is: Iceland based privacy platform providing encrypted video calls, chat and email service. You can have a free limited account that will never expire and use it to send email that will have your computer IP hidden.
Vmail: It hides your computer IP in the email headers, SSL connection, virtual keyboard to thwart keyloggers when you access your email in public computers, and a pledge to erase all connection logs after 3 months. Their servers are located in the Netherlands.
Safe-mail: Connection is through SSL, emails in between Safe-mail users are always encrypted, when sending messages to an external address it can be encrypted with a digital certificate after importing it to Safe-mail or use a dropbox, they call it “Safebox”, where the other end is sent a link to a password protected page to retrieve the message. Safe-Mail doesn’t hide your computer IP in the headers and free accounts have a small inbox. The company is based in Israel.
Hushmail: Offering automatic PGP encryption in between Hushmail users, it eliminates the sender computer IP from the headers, email can be accessed with a mobile device, compatible with the iPhone. If you don’t log into your free Hushmail account for some weeks it will be automatically closed. The company headquarters are located in Canada.
StartMail: Still in development, but they accept beta testing accounts signups. This email service is managed by well known privacy search engine Startpage and they are based in the Netherlands.
Lavaboom: Early beta, planned features for this privacy email service will include three factor authentication, encrypted storage and zero knowledge customer service.
Webmail services hiding your IP
The following email services do not use encryption but hide your computer IP when sending a message. I tested all of them and the sender’s IP is replaced with a neutral IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) private IP address, a range of IP addresses not linked to any country or person reserved for use in private networks, the only way to find out who sent the email would be to contact the company behind the email infrastructure.
Gmail: With huge storage space but Google will scan all of your emails to insert what they call “contextual advertising“, a privacy invasion by itself. Gmail replaces the email sender’s IP with an internal IP address.
Zoho Mail: Easy to integrate with their online office apps to work with documents, there are no advertisements whatsoever.
NOTE: Some email services will only strip your computer IP from the headers for webmail and include the computer IP in messages sent using SMTP.
